VETERANS DAY PROGRAM
NINETY SIX HIGH SCHOOL
12 November 2015

For the fourth consecutive year, cadets from Emerald High School traveled to Ninety Six High School to play a major role in their Veterans Day Program.  In addition to presenting and retiring the colors, the cadets honored each of the military services by posting their flag.  A special tribute was given to Vietnam Veterans.  A cadet walked the audience through how Vietnam  Veterans were treated when they returned to America during the latter stages of the war.  All Vietnam Veterans in attendance were asked to stand and they received a thundering round of applause as the cadet repeatedly said, "Welcome Home".  In the latter half of the program, the cadets sang a solo, "America the Beautiful", read a poem, and ended the ceremony with the playing of the Armed Forces Medley.  The twenty cadets that traveled and performed at Ninety Six included top row (l-r) Hackett, Conklin, Piland, Hackett, Vest, Gordon, Davis, Darragh; second row (l-r) Tucker, Assele, Henderson, Pietrowski, Williams, Latham, Elson, Cockrell; first row (l-r) Lawson, Seabolt, Lewis, Gingrich, Hernandez.

EMERALD HONORS VETERANS

Emerald High School held their fourteenth annual Veterans Day program on Wednesday, 11 November in the school’s gymnasium.  The program began with the presentation of colors, pledge of allegiance, and the singing of the national anthem by Cadet Kya Brownlee.

Special recognition and honors were bestowed upon the Veterans that are members of Emerald's faculty and staff, which included Franklin Partlow, Ray Tippett, Barry Kinard, SMSgt Paul St. Jean and Lt Col Bernard Taylor.

The program was divided into several segments; the first being the posting of the armed service flags.  Cadets narrated information about each military service, followed by the posting of each service flag.  After the service flags were posted, Cadet Triston Lawson performed a beautiful rendition of God Bless America.

Perhaps the most moving moment during the program was the tribute to honor and welcome home our Vietnam veterans, as our nation celebrates the 50th anniversary of that war.  The audience was visibly moved by the presentation of Cadet Julian Assele as he walked them through how Vietnam veterans were treated upon return to American soil during the latter stages of the war. Vietnam veterans in attendance commented following the program how much they appreciated the tribute and being “Welcomed Home” in such a touching and meaningful way.

As is the tradition at Emerald’s Veterans Day program, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice were honored by a moment of silence and the playing of TAPS.

Guest speaker for the program was Major Justin Goldstein, who is currently on active duty with the United States Air Force.  Major Goldstein is a 2000 graduate of Emerald High School.  While at Emerald, he was an exceptional student and four-year leader in the Air Force Junior ROTC program.

The program closed with the playing of the Armed Service Medley.
